South Central Railway was formed on 02.10.1966 incorporating Hubli and Vijayawada Divisions of Southern Railway and Sholapur and Secunderabad Divisions of Central Railway. Later Solapur division was merged back with Central Railway and Guntakal division of Southern Railway was added to South Central Railway (SCR). SCR has now six divisions - SECUNDERABAD, HYDERABAD, VIJAYAWADA, GUNTUR, GUNTAKAL and NANDED. SCR is the third largest zone in Indian Railways, both in terms of size and gross earnings. The zone predominantly serves the states of Andhrapradesh, Telangana, parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka and to a limited extent, Tamilnadu and Madhyapradesh.
The Zone runs 744 passenger and 350 Goods trains daily (272 Express trains, 354 Passenger trains and 118 Sub-Urban trains and serves 742 stations.
O/o Principal Director of Audit is responsible for auditing all accounts related to South Central Railway. He/She is also responsible for auditing the accounts of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications, Secunderabad and Railway Recruitment Board, Secunderabad which are independent units functioning directly under the control of Railway Board.
The operation, management and accounting of South Central Railway is organised on Divisional Units basis and O/o Principal Director of Audit has corresponding field offices at divisional units.
