Transport plays a pivotal role in ensuring sustained economic growth as it is a key element in development of various infrastructure in states and in the country as a whole. Transport department Tamil Nadu strives to ensure safe, efficient, economical, seamless and environment-friendly transport system for the mobility ofpeople and goods within the State.
The prime functions of the Transport Department are as follows:- (i) Issue of Driving and Conductor Licences. (ii) Registration of Motor Vehicles (iii) Inspection of vehicles to grant and renew fitness certificate. (iv) Grant of permits to Transport Vehicles. (v) Collection of Motor Vehicles Tax and Fees.
(vi) Inspection of vehicles involved in accidents. (vii) Checking of Vehicles on road to enforce the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act and Rules.
(viii) Implementing road safety measures and controlling vehicular pollution. (ix) Granting licence to run Driving School establishment. (x) Granting licence for setting up Vehicular Emission Testing Centre.
